Help with resizing the menu/images

Hi,

I've read through all related posts that I could find in these forums but still have been unable to answer the following problem:

I'm wanting to be able to use different image dimensions with the image menu so that I have images that are more landscape than the boxy style right now. I have changed loads of different CSS settings and even took a look at the js even though I know jack all about it. No matter what I change, no matter what I do, my new images getted cropped to the set dimensions of the menu.

It took me a few hours to scale the menu to fit the entire width of the page but it's not totally what I want yet. Even with that, I just altered the closed width of each image and kept adding/subtracting pixels until it filled the page. The result was that the difference in size between an open and a closed image isn't much and i would like it more dynamic (i.e. the closed tabs are quite small relative to the open one)

If anyone could help me find a way to do the above, it would be really appreciated. I know nothing about coding and only functional in CSS so please be specific where possible.
